The common causes of bad breath;
- Dental decay at the roots of the teeth may result in abscesses in the gums with foul smelling pus giving bad odor to the breath. Even small holes in the teeth may provide a place where germs can multiply and give foul odors. These are very common in younger people.
- Badly fitting dentures that are not cleaned properly also leads to bad breath. It is common in old people.
- Bad breath does not arise from the stomach. Actually, anaerobic bacteria in mouth produce smelly sulfur compounds that cause bad breath. Other causes for the bad breath may be infection of the tonsils, adenoids or sinuses.
- Bad breath may also arise from the inflammation in the stomach and also from the food materials that have not been completely digested.
- Tobacco, alcohol, alcohol containing mouth rinses, dry mouth, foods like garlic, onion, and spicy foods, hunger, morning breath, poor oral hygiene can also cause bad breath.
- Colds, coughs and sore throats are also reasons for bad breath, because the surrounding area in the mouth has increased bacterial content.
How to fight bad breath;
A person can never suffer from bad breath if he/she keeps teeth, tongue, and mouth clean. One should take all care in cleaning teeth by using proper toothbrush and using proper brushing technique.
- Brush your teeth in the morning, in the evening, and after every meal and floss, especially after eating milk products, fish and meat.
- Wash the tongue with baking soda dissolved in warm water to decrease the acidity in mouth making a less-friendly environment for the bacteria to grow.
- Equally, drinking lots of water will help wash away bad bacteria and is always a good place to start. Powerful antioxidants that stop the growth of bacteria in the mouth.
- Not only has green tea been found to prevent heart disease and cancer, but studies have also shown that it can help beat bad breath! One study found that antioxidants in green tea (called polyphenols), destroy many compounds in the mouth that can lead to bad breath, tooth decay and even mouth cancer.
- Equally, vitamin C can be contributing to bad breath since vitamin C helps hinder the anaerobic bacteria that accumulates in the mouth.
Be sure to consume vitamin C rich citrus fruits like oranges, tomatoes, and grapefruits, or grab some berries and melons. Not only do these foods help prevent the growth of bacteria, they also help prevent gum disease and gingivitis! It should be noted that acidic foods like the ones mentioned here can contribute to acid erosion of your teeth. Therefore, it’s always best to wash down acidic snacks like apples and oranges with plenty of water, and to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.
