Following the floods from August 20 to 21, 2020, Roger Mbassa Ndine, mayor of the city of Douala Cameroon is touring various municipalities to see the realities and conditions in which the affected populations live.
Residents of Douala, Cameroon’s largest city and economic capital are still coping with Friday’s floods after heavy rains. While many have lost their belongings, others are yet to find shelter after their homes were buried by the waters.
Excessive flooding is not a new phenomenon to the Douala inhabitants, but it becomes a problem when the city’s activities virtually come to a halt because of excess rain.
Friday, August 21st, 2020, was one of those days when residents either had to swim to work, pay for improvised transportation by makeshift canoes, or miss out on work entirely.
Critics say lack of strategic town planning, the poor drainage system, and lethargic governance approaches are at the heart of the problem.
The Mayor’s tour ended with a reassuring message to the population that they and their belongings will be kept safe but warns that weather forecast predicts more rains, floods thus everyone should redouble vigilance.
