Cameroon: If nothing is done Paul Biya will never leave power, says French parliamentarians.

French parliamentarians Rodrigue Kokouendo and Didier Quentin have their opinion that Paul Biya will never leave power.

The representatives of the French National Assembly Rodrigue Kokouendo and Didier Quentin are of the opinion that something should be done if Paul Biya have to leave power.

In the report of the mission conducted in Cameroon from January 14 to 17, 2020, these French parliamentarians analyze the political future of the country.

According to them Paul Biya still have more than one term to rule. To them the succession of Paul Biya “will take place at the latest at the end of the next term”, that is, 2032.

They fear more longevity in power for Biya, especially at a time when Cameroon is faced with socio-political instability(English-speaking regions of the North-West and the South-West, security tensions in the Far North), they think Paul Biya will use this to his advantage to remain in power for a longer period.

The deputies cited that “this country (Cameroon Editor’s note) which is, we can say, pivot in Central Africa, can play its role, if I can use this expression, of factor and even of ‘exporter of stability, in a region which is subject to very strong tensions, and also of hopes for the youth ”.

To them, Paul Biya is at risk being in chaos. It is likely to happen the same way it happened in Ivory Coast. “(…) With several dolphins of equal force, [he] is not to be excluded and it seems that this is what has happened in recent months, since our mission. At the time of succession, any fragility, whether in the English-speaking West or in the North with Boko Haram, can be exploited by an internal party or by a foreign state and lead to serious disturbances ”, the Commission delegates of Foreign Affairs of the French National Assembly in Cameroon predicts.
