The Constitutional Council opens hearing of appeals from political parties claiming election irregularities.
Opening of the first hearing at the Constitutional Council this Monday. After a series of hearings, the Constitutional Court must settle the disputes and announce the results by 29 February latest.
The letters requesting the partial or total cancellation of the municipal and legislative elections in certain electoral districts, will be examined by the judges of the Constitutional Court of Yaoundé Monday February 17,
announced the registry of jurisdiction.
The complainants base their arguments on a double ballot which they consider to be full of irregularities, corruption, disrespect for the electoral process and other acts of intimidation.
“We from the CPDM (Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement) in the Adamawa region, ask for the cancellation of the legislative elections because the political party UNDP (National Union for Democracy and
Progress) did not stop its campaign on Saturday February 8 at midnight as stated by law, “said outgoing deputy Hamadou Ali Bachir in his request.
In another petition filed by the CPDM in Adamawa, the ruling party accuses the UNDP of “buying the consciences of the voters” for “financial compensation”. He regrets that these scenes took place in the presence of
the police.
After a series of hearings, the Constitutional Court must settle the disputes and announce the results by 29 February at the latest.
Last Wednesday, the municipal election supervision commissions published results from the February 9 poll.
Unsurprisingly, it is the party to be filled, the CPDM, which will lead in whole or in part with certain political parties 316 in the 360 councils of Cameroon.
The UNDP comes second with 16 councils which will be run in whole or in part with other political parties.
A newcomer to the Cameroonian political scene, the Cameroonian Party for National Reconciliation (PCRN) of Cabral Libiih, candidate for the last presidential election, comes in 3rd position. It totals seven
municipalities.
