The French Ambassador to Cameroon reports that Paul Biya has promised to open an investigation into the death of journalist Samuel Wazizi.


On June 5, the president of the Republic Paul Biya granted audience to the French Ambassador to Cameroon Christophe Guilhou.

Among the agenda of their conversation was the death of the Buea based journalist Samuel Wazizi.  The French Ambassador Christophe Guilhou said president Paul Biya has promised to investigate the cause of the journalist’s death while in detention.

The government of Cameroon on Friday June 5,2020 officially confirmed the death of Samuel Wazizi, which was exclusively announced by Equinoxe Television on June 2,2020.

According to the Ministry of Defense through the Head of the Communication Department Commander Cyrille Serge Atonfack Guemo, affirms that the journalist died in the Yaounde military hospital on August 17,2019 following a severe sepsis.

The report of the Defense Ministry says that Wazizi “who called himself a host on a local TV station was actually a logistician from various terrorist groups”.

The government said they notified the family of the journalist after his death to come for his corpse for burial. But in a video circulating on social media, the brother of the deceased claims tha the family was never informed of the death of his brother.

Christophe Guilhou revealed to the press his conversation with the president Paul Biya over the death of the journalist. He told the press that the president is interested in the matter, and has promised to open an investigation.

“We talked about human rights, since I expressed my deep emotion to him after the death of journalist Samuel Wazizi, and the president promised me that he would launch the investigations to shed light on this affair “, said the French Ambassador to Cameroon Christophe Guilhou.

Journalists have been very active with the case of their colleague, with plans of public demonstration in the days ahead.
