Kamto ran as one of the presidential candidates in the 2018 presidential elections, where he represented his CRM party.

The elections results favored the incumbent President Paul Biya of the CPDM who won the election.

Kamto was declared runner-up, receiving 14 percent of the votes.

Kamto challenged the official results of the presidential election, where he declared himself winner of the election, together with his supporters.

His supporters held small-scale protests since then.
