The National Union of the Cameroon Journalists is making plans to invade the office of the governor over the death of their colleague Samuel Wazizi.

 

Cameroonian Journalist Samuel Ajiekah Abuwe Aka popularly known as Samuel Wazizi is dead. He was arrested and transferred to the military barracks, where he was detained and held incommunicado for over 11 months.

No one had ever seen the journalist after his arrest; his lawyer and family members were never granted access to see or know where he was detained.

We learnt that Samuel Wazizi finally died after severe torture from the prison authorities.

On Wednesday June 3, 2020 the National Union of Journalists of Cameroon (SNJC) through its president Denis Nkwebo confirmed this information.

“ The SNJC confirms the death of Samuel Wazizi. He died at the Yaoundé military hospital where he was transferred after several months of torture. All journalists must mobilize to respond to the slogan that the SNJC and CAMSEJ will announce in a few hours, ” Denis Nkwebo tweeted.

Wazizi was arrested for a case allegedly connected with the Anglophone crisis, something he declared innocent. The announcement of his death brought in several public opinions and criticisms.

Agbor Balla, Human Rights lawyer has demanded answers on what happened to the journalist.

What really happened to Samuel Wazizi? We need government responses. We say no to impunity and yes to accountability, ” Balla tweeted.

In addition, the South West journalist have announced a demonstration at the Governor’s office scheduled for June 4, at 9 a.m in Buea.

Ilaria Allegrozzi, senior researcher with the international organization Human Rights Watch has also commented on the death of Samuel Wazizi.

” If information on the death in detention following the torture of journalist Samuel Wazizi is confirmed, it is incredibly sad. His case highlights the dangers faced by many other journalists, often the target of harassment, intimidation, threats and assaults by security forces and authorities,” she tweeted.
