For the second consecutive year, the war in the North West and South West, the attack by Boko Haram in the North, and the refugee crisis in the East placed Cameroon in this position.

 

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), an NGO that works in defending the rights of displaced persons around the world made published the reports of its ranking.

On Wednesday June 10, 2020 the NGO reported the ranking of ten countries in the world where political crises , social, humanitarian …, were the most neglected in 2019.

Cameroon has taken the lead of the ranking for the second consecutive year. The country is faced with three main crises; the civil war in the North West and South West, the war against Islamic group Boko Haram in the North, and the Refugee crisis in the Eastern region.

According to the NRC, in 2019 Boko Haram carried out more than 100 attacks in the region, resulting to the death of more than 100 persons. As a result of the numerous attacks, more than 500,000 persons were forces the flee the violence zone.

In the North West and South West regions, the NRC ascertained the loss of nearly 3,000 human lives since the crisis began in 2016. Their statistics also revealed that more than 700,000 were displaced, including 52,000 to neighboring Nigeria.

The North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon already suffered from poverty before the crisis and 80% of all health and education services were not functioning “, deplores NRC in its report.

In the East, 280,000 refugees who fled the fighting in the Central African Republic are taking refuge in the East region.

Only 3,000 refugees were able to return to their country in 2019 , on the basis of a ratified agreement between Cameroon, CAR and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to the report of the NGO Cameroon’s call for humanitarian aid from international partners were the least funded, and only 43% of these calls were followed up.
