Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. There are different types of diabetes which include, Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes and also Gestational Diabetes, there is also Prediabetes. Diabetic patients have some meals they are encouraged to consume, meanwhile there are some meals that are not advisable for diabetic patients.
Foods to be consumed by diabetic patients;
1. Fatty fish:
fishes like Salmon, sardines, herring, anchovies, and mackerel are great sources of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, which have major benefits for heart health.
2. Leafy greens:
Avocados contain less than 1 gram of sugar, carbohydrates, a high fiber content, and healthy fats, this will actually not raise your blood sugar levels.
Eggs help decrease inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, increase your HDL (good) cholesterol levels, and modify the size and shape of your LDL (bad) cholesterol.
5. Chia seeds:
Chia seeds are a wonderful food for people with diabetes. They’re extremely high in fiber, yet low in digestible carbs
Other foods include:
Beans, Greek yogurt, Nuts, Broccoli, Extra-virgin olive oil, Flaxseeds, Apple cider vinegar and vinegar, Strawberries, Garlic, Squash.
Foods To avoid;
1. Sugar-sweetened beverages:
They contain a concentrated amount of sugar which can cause blood sugar levels to rise rapidly.
3. White bread, rice, and pasta:
You can eat bread, but just not the white bread because it contains refined grains, not a whole grain which can directly lead to elevated blood-sugar levels
3. Fruit-flavored yogurt:
Most fruit-flavored yogurts on the market contain little precious fruit and are sweetened with sugar instead. The much sugar in this is not good for the health.
4. Sweetened breakfast cereals:
Most breakfast cereal are very high in added sugar which is not good for a diabetic patient. So go in for less sweetened cereals.
5. Dried fruit:
Fresh fruits contain better nutrients than dried fruits. When the fruit is fresh, it contains water and fiber which is good for you but when it is dry we can not really boost of its nutrients.
6. Fruit juice:
Fruit juice contains all the carbs and sugar found in fresh fruit, but it also lacks fibers that will help regulate the sugar levels. It is preferable to eat your fruits whole.
7. French fries:
It is not that you can’t eat potatoes, you just have to be careful of how they’re prepared and how much you consume. This is because, fried foods are high in simple carbs and fat, which is a tough combination for diabetics.
