Anglophone Crisis: US Ambassador to Cameroon to follow up investigation of Wazizi’s death.
The United State Ambassador to Cameroon Henry Peter Balerin wrote to Wazizi’s lawyers.
On Wednesday June 10, 2020 the United States Ambassador to Cameroon Henry Peter Balerin wrote a correspondence to the lawyers of late Samuel Wazizi.
Henry Peter Balerin, who had offered condolence to the lawyers of the journalist said he was disturbed by the circumstances surrounding the death of Samuel Wazizi.
“Let me start by offering my sincere condolences for the loss of your client and friend, Samuel Ajiekah Abuwe (Wazizi). The circumstances surrounding his death (that of Wazizi) in detention are deeply disturbing, and we are closely following President Paul Biya’s commitment to the French ambassador to order a thorough and impartial investigation to shed light on what is happening.” wrote the American Ambassador.
The Ambassador, Henry Peter Balerin encourages the journalist’s lawyers in the search for justice.
“I am also alarmed that your colleagues have received anonymous and repeated threats following the request for justice for your client. I asked the political official of the embassy to contact you about this. Lawyers play an important role in the maintenance of democratic values and the protection of human rights. You should be able to continue serving your customers in peace and security, ” he wrote.
Wazizi who was arrested in Buea died in detention after being tortured. His family and lawyers had no access to him for the more than 300 days he spent in detention. He was accused of collaborating with the separatist fighters.
The Cameroon Journalist Association together with the South West chapter have been seeking for justice for Wazizi.
Journalists in Cameroon have been facing threats from government for simply putting right their duties as journalists; many have been arrested, tortured, and detained.
