The cities of Galim (West) and Bamenda (North-West) suffered two attacks between March 7 and 8, 2020 respectively.

On Saturday, around 20 gunmen attacked a gendarmerie and a police station in Galim, in a predominantly French-speaking province, officials said.

Two women gendarmes were killed, two male police officers and four civilians, they added.

On Sunday, in anglophone Northwest province, a homemade bomb injured at least seven people including a soldier who later died, state television said.

Galim attack

Armed separatists attacked a village in the African nation of Cameroon’s western French-speaking region on Sunday, killing at least seven people, according to a top offical and a resident.

Gov. Awa Fonka Augustine of the West region said separatists from the country’s troubled English-speaking northwest region crossed over early Sunday and attacked a security post in the village of Galim, killing

officers and civilians.

The governor wouldn’t give a death toll but local media and residents said at least seven people were killed.

“Our forces are in search of the attackers who from every indication were out to seize weapons and ammunition from the forces,” the governor said.

“I saw the military transporting the corpses of four of their colleagues who were at the military checkpoint and we are about to bury 3 people who were killed in the attack,” said resident Jean Kamfuti.

Cameroon´s Anglophone rebels have been fighting since 2017 to create an independent, English-speaking state in the majority French-speaking country´s western regions.

The U.N. says the conflict has cost more than 3,000 lives and forced half a million to flee to French-speaking regions of Cameroon or into neighboring Nigeria.

Bamenda explosion

An actuated explosive device sowed panic at the Grand stand in Bamenda. The detonation took place when Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique was delivering his speech.

The explosion in Bamenda on March 8, killed a soldier. Seven other people were injured.

According to David Eboutou, the official gallery was also affected by the explosion.

On the authors of this act on this day celebrating the woman, there is not yet certainty. However, the arrest of a girl is announced. She would be the one who activated the device.

Government’s reaction

In a press release, the minister of communication and government spokesman vehemently condemned the act.

“The Government firmly condemns these despicable acts perpetrated by criminals whose sole objective is to sow chaos to serve selfish interests, and conveys to the families of the military and civilian victims the

sincere condolences of the President of the Republic, Head of the forces armies, as well as the comfort of the entire Cameroonian people to the wounded. In addition, in view of the extent of the damage caused by the

secessionist terrorists, the National Defense and Security Forces launched a search operation of the area and arrangements were made for increased security in the locality of Galim ”  René Emmanuel Sadi, the

government spokesman , informs in a press release signed on March 8, 2020.
