CAF has brought closer the date for the 2021 AFCON tournament. Will Cameroon be able to meet up with this new date?

This competition will take place from January 15 to February 14. And no longer in June-July as initially planned.

A new date for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) football 2021, is now known. According to, the AFCON will take place from

January 15 to February 14, and no longer in June-July as initially planned. Nothing is yet official since even if the date change is rumored in

the corridors of CAF. That is to say the African Football Confederation.

No surprise.

This change of date is hardly a surprise since it has been whispering for several months. The CAF Executive Committee had approved a

change in the date of this competition. It was Thursday, November 21, 2019 in Cairo, Egypt. “In my opinion, it is not possible, due to the

climatic conditions in Cameroon, to organize the African Cup of Nations in June / July. Clearly, so we have to make a decision on the date. ”

Said Ahmad Ahmad, the president of the (CAF on Monday, December 23, 2019.

According to the head of the apex body of African football, the change is dictated by the different climatic conditions of the continent. “I do not

know why the media have forgotten that this was discussed in detail at the CAF symposium in Morocco in 2017 “. He added.

Unsuitable weather conditions

Through his remarks, Ahmad Ahmad excluded the hypothesis that CAN 2021 could be played again in summer.

Apart from the bad weather conditions, the establishment by FIFA on the new format of the Club World Cup is a thorn in the side of CAF. This

competition is supposed to be contested during the same period as the Cameroon AFCON.

The decision to move the AFCON from January to June came to guarantee the presence of the great African footballers playing in Europe.

Also to better sell this event. Bringing it back at the start of the year will no doubt spark new controversies.
