Most people at some point in time have probably woken up with neck pain and did not remember some circumstances that led to those pains. To begin, note that the neck is made up of vertebrae that extend from the skull to the upper torso. Occasionally, most people experience neck pain or stiffness due to things like poor posture, injury, poor sleeping position, or a signal for some illnesses. Neck pain usually arises from the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.RELATED: How to handle neck pain at home
Some Symptoms of neck pain may include
- Muscle tightness and spasms
- Headache
- Radiating pain or numbness in the neck area
- Sharp pain when you are moving and twisting
- Neck pain often causes a feeling as though the neck is “stiff” or “stuck.”
- Neck pain can sometimes cause a decreased range of motion.
Causes of neck pain
Neck pain or stiffness can happen for a variety of reasons which include
- Working at a desk for too long without changing position
- Sleeping with your neck in a bad position can cause neck pain the next morning
- Sitting, standing, or laying in poor posture can cause neck pain
- Heart attack is a possible cause of neck pain
- Meningitis causes neck pain. This is an inflammation of the thin tissue that surrounds the brain and spinal cord which can in turn result in a stiff neck.
7 ways to avoid neck injury or pain
- Your neck problem could be a result of the type of pillow you rest your neck on. It is advisable to change your pillow when you feel the pain repeating itself.
- Make sure to use a pillow that keeps your cervical spine in neutral alignment.
- Sleep on your back if you can. Most people do not know how to sleep on their backs, meanwhile sleeping on the back is the best sleeping position.
- If you prefer to sleep on your side, it is good to make sure your pillow is not too high. Healthwise, it is usually very advisable for your pillow to be around 4 to 6 inches thick.
- Make sure your computer monitor is at eye level. One cause of neck pain is sitting on a computer desk and working for hours in the wrong position. To manage this issue, make sure your computer is at your eye level for more comfort.
- When your neck hurts, it is good to exercise and stretch your neck more often. If your neck hurts and you keep it in that same fixed position, it will cause the pain to increase. So to avoid this, move the neck more often.
- Avoid using your phone for a long. Texting or looking down at your cell phone or mobile device for any length of time puts excessive strain on your neck.
In case you try all these tips and it does not work, make sure that your visit a doctor for a proper checkup.
