Gabonese parliament has withdrawn punishment on same sex sexual relationships.

On June 23, 2020, the Gabonese National Assembly adopted the bill aiming to modify  law n ° 042/2018 of July 05, 2019 on the Penal Code of the Republic of Gabon.

Paragraph 5 of article 402 of the Penal Code in force since July 2019 which condemned homosexuality was among the bills modified.

Clearly, the Gabonese law no longer punishes ” sexual relations between people of the same sex “.

But the ban on ” any immodesty or unnatural act on an individual of his sex and a minor under the age of eighteen ” was retained.

Even though same-sex marriage on its part has not been legalized, gays and lesbians in Gabon are now free to display themselves without fear of violating the law.

Faced with a possible rejection of the deletion of this paragraph, since the absolute majority necessary for the decriminalization of homosexuality was not reached at first reading, the debates continued at the National

Assembly where the votes cast remained the same.

As a reminder, 48 deputies voted for decriminalization, 24 voted against while 25 abstained. ” The 25 abstentions were not counted as votes cast, the withdrawal of paragraph 5 was voted, ”  said  a

visibly disappointed MP, Gabon review . ” 48 deputies shake an entire Nation and its habits and customs“, He regretted.
