The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention describes the detention of former CRTV boss Amadou Valmouke as illegal.

Since the arrest and detention of Amadou Valmouke, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has been involved in the fight for the release of the former CRTV boss. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) seized in January 2019, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention for the release of Amadou Valmouke.

The working group of the UN concludes that the detention of Amadou Valmouke has “no legal basis” and extends “beyond the maximum limit prescribed by law, and without explanation sufficient reasonableness and necessity of this measure “ , says RSF in the June 12, 2020 press release.

According to the press release, the UN has urged the government of Cameroon for the immediate release of Amadou Valmouke, and also ensuring that he gets the maximum medical attention needed.

Amadou Valmouke in prison

“The UN urges the government to release Mr. Vamoulké immediately and to ensure that he receives the necessary medical treatment as much as possible. The journalist, now  aged 70 , is sick, and no suitable medical protocol has been followed despite two medical certificates prescribing examinations which cannot be carried out in Cameroon. The Coronavirus epidemic  who has not spared the Yaoundé central prison in which Amadou Vamoulké is imprisoned has also not led the authorities to grant him release, even if only provisional. The group of experts who expressed “deep concern” about the “seriousness of the journalist” decided to transfer his case to the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, a  mechanism also activated by RSF “ , says RSF.

According to the head of the RSF NGO for Africa Arnaud Froger, “the United Nations conclusions on the arbitrary nature of this detention join those of RSF and add a new voice to those already numerous who demand the release of this eminent African journalist”.

Amadou Valmouke was arrest in July 2016 and was sued before the Special Criminal Court for embezzlement of public funds worth billions of francs CFA. For the first time he spoke in court in May 2020, proclaiming his innocence and referring to the allegations as plots.
