Separatist leader, Shufai deserves proper medical attention out of prison.
On May 21, despite his health condition and apparent pressure from the prison authorities, one of Ambazonian leaders, Blaise Sevidzem Berinyuy, popularly known as Shufai was discharged from the hospital and sent back to a high security prison in Yaounde.
Transferring Shufai back to a prison where the transmission of COVID-19 is more likely, endangers his health and life.
For reasons not associated with COVID-19, Shufai was transferred from prison to the hospital on May 16, 2020.
According to his family and lawyer, he was unconscious, in a significantly deteriorated health condition for the past 10 days.
The said despite being able to move, Shufai was handcuffed to the hospital bed on the night of May 19.
His lawyers and family members reported that the head of the prison visited the military hospital twice, mounting pressure on the medical staff of the hospital to discharge Shufai despite his health condition.
In January 2018, Shufai and nine other “Ambazonia interim government” leaders were arrested in Abuja, Nigeria and sent to Cameroon.
An act which was denounced by United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, for violating fundamental principle of of non-refoulement.
A Nigerian court in March declared the arrest of these ten leaders illegal.
At the Cameroon State Defense Secretariat prison, these ten leaders were held held incommunicado for six months before they were sent the the Yaounde maximum security prison, where they were charged with terrorism, rebellion, and secession, and sentenced to life before a military court on August 20, 2019.
