Switzerland claims to have had a telephone interview with president Paul Biya on Thursday, May 14, 2020.
Simonetta Sommaruga, president of the Swiss Confederation said she spoke on telephone with Paul Biya on Thursday, May 14, 2020.
She made the announcement of her conversation with Cameroon Head of State on her tweeter page.
Simonetta Sommaruga, president of the Swiss Confederation also serves in capacity as the Head of Government for Switzerland.
The focus of the telephone conversation was on health and humanitarian cooperation as well as the current crisis in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.
” Glad to have had an exchange of views today with President @PR_Paul_BIYA on health and humanitarian cooperation in Cameroon as well as on Swiss engagement in the search for solutions in the North West and South West”, she tweeted.
She reiterated her country’s desire and willingness to support Cameroon in search for peace in her two English region which has resulted to thousands of death and displaced persons.
The Swiss government has made several attempts to initiate a negotiation for peace between the government of Cameroon and the separatists.
Unfortunately these attempts have also been denied or hindered by either the separatists or the Cameroon government.
To the Cameroon government, Swiss intervention isn’t necessary as she boasted of the Grand National Dialogue.
She believes the recommendations adopted from the Grand National Dialogue will provide a long lasting solution to the two English speaking regions of Cameroon.
The separatist (secessionists) leaders on their part laid down some prerequisites before any third party negotiation will be allowed.
They demanded the recognition of the autonomy of the two English regions, and the release of those arrested and detained as a result of the crisis.
With these, it makes it difficult for any third party negotiation to be effected.
